Women are often faced with a lot of barriers beyond those that are imposed by the covertures laws. The dominant social and religious perspective held that women were inferior to men. Poetry is one the dominant style that Murray used on the essay ‘On the Equality of Sexes’. The essay begins in form of a letter whereby Murray makes it clears that the targeted audience of the essay is male readers. Murray proceeds to dedicate her essay to the ‘Patronage of Candor’ as a way of warning her readers that what follows in the essay might be shocking for its authenticity and honesty. The rest of the preface includes the poem of Murray which is used to summarize the main points of the essay in rhyming verses. The poem is used to develop the theme of gender in inequality and the argument of spiritual and intellectual equality between men and women which is further supported by the rest of the essay.
Murray uses the poem to define the equality of sexes and emphasize the presence of women’s capacity to invent. While focusing on the ability of the female ability the author investigates particular similarities and differences between sexes through judgment. From the very beginning of the poem, Murray observes the significance of this issue in introduction when she claims, “That minds are not alike, and full well I know, this truth each day’s experience will show” (Murray, 133) This is the most important hook related to this phrase and it might attract the attention of the readers to analyze the meaning of the problem reflected because the claims laid by the author are accurate and evident. Murray also designates that imagination and science are the distinguishing aspects which strengthen the superiority of women by making considerable efforts to discover different new things. Despite the fact that women lack the ability to determine reasons, the words “Invention is perhaps the most arduous effort of the mind; this branch of imagination hath been particularly ceded to us” prove that women have another direction of thoughts (Murray 134).
