What is the relationship between the poem that introduces Murray's essay and the content and themes of the essay, "On the Equality of the Sexes?"
Introduction
The poem in the essay, "On the Equality of the Sexes" is an introduction to the theme of the essay. The essay talks about the differences between people on various levels. For example, on the first line, the poem talks about how different the minds of people are. The truth of these differences is seen with each passing days' experiences. However, the spirit that people show makes a difference. The strength they display is surprising. The theme of the poem is built on the argument that despite the human differences, people can still be equal regarding the spirits and strength they put into their endeavors.
The poem brings forth the differences that are purported as the cause of the lack of equality amongst people of different sexes. It talks about how their bodies sexually judge women's worth. They are limited because of the way nature has designed them. The poem outlines values that women embrace, and this promotes the equality of sexes. However, it also identifies some women who do not want to improve. Such women do not embrace things like knowledge acquisition and perseverance that promotes them to be equal to man. Such women look up to men for the provision of their needs. They feel as if they were created, inferior souls. The poem brings about the way women view themselves and how it shapes the difference between them and men.
The poem also talks about how some men have made it impossible for women's livelihoods to be improved. They can be termed as the enemies of equality. In a statement that states that men rob women of the power to grow, it is evident just how women's empowerment is threatened by male dominance (Pizzetta, p 1-9). The family brings to light that the perceptions that threaten the ability to improve will come to an end when people will appreciate the difference amongst people of both genders and make an effort to create equality.
