Life in Canada and Life in China
Life in Canada tends to differ greatly from life in China although there are a number of similarities. To start with, the culture or the way of life in Canada is different from that of China. Canadians emphasize on autonomy or individualism while Chinese people live in a collective manner. Second, the style of communication is different since Canadians can be regarded as people who like to debate or appear are confrontational (Brett, Behfar & Sanchez-Burks). On the contrary, Chinese people are more sensitive and they may simply nod to a person’s opinion even when they do not agree with their ideologies. Another major difference is associated with humility and self-promotion. Life in Canada is full of people who would want to discuss their success, while those in China show humility and rarely discuss their success.
Another important difference is associated with personal versus professional lives. In Canada, people tend to separate their professional lives from their personal lives, always ensuring that their lives at home stay private (Corley 57). Although office parties may enable Canadian families to socialize, most of their family activities usually remain private. On the other hand, in China, there is relationship or “guanxi” which motivates people to socialize and have a very little difference between professional and personal lives. It is during such occasions where Chinese develop genuine trust with each other, and people in the office get to know the personal life of their colleagues.
