ENGL 495 Building a Portfolio: History in the English Language
This assignment is for ENGL495 and the goal is to build my own portfolio of 4 papers I have previously written. My professor says we need outcomes 1,2,3,5 which I have no idea what that means in building a portfolio. I will be attaching the 4 papers used in my portfolio along with revised feedback on some of them from my Effective Writing Center.
You will be providing argumentative explanations that demonstrate how each of your chosen papers applies to the Outcomes. The individual explanation for each chosen paper/outcome has multiple functions:
states the course outcome(s) to which the paper is aligned and introduces the paper
makes a brief argument as to how the paper fits the course outcome(s)
identifies the critical theory being used in the paper
uses the summary you created in Week 2 as evidence to demonstrate how the paper aligns with the outcome and the critical theory. To do so, you will have to add in claims, use the summary as your evidence, and provide a warrant.
The explanations should be written using formal academic writing, MLA formatting, strong writing skills, and third person point of view.
Identify the paper title, the course title, the institution where you wrote the paper, and the year you wrote it.
The explanation is about one page long, but no longer than 1 page. To be compliant with MLA formatting, your submission should be double-spaced using Times New Roman, 12 point font.
Note: For Outcome 5, you should also demonstrate how you applied the peer editing and what you are taking away from this process. Keep in mind the objectives of the outcome: to show collaboration and an understanding of your own writing process. You may not have completed this work yet, so at this point, include a sentence that notes you will do so before the final submission of the portfolio.
Your instructor will provide feedback on these explanations. You will then rework your explanations and include them in the portfolio according to the prescribed layout.

Paper Title: History in the English Language.
Firstly, the paper explains the history of the English language, which shows that it is an expository text aimed at creating and shaping an understanding of the language. This makes the paper a work of non-fiction, a different genre and a notion that meets the requirements of outcome one which serves to analyze actions from another style used in the text which in this case is non-fiction (Algeo 130). Further, the paper uses analogy as its primary literary term to meet the second requirement of the same outcome where it compares between two concepts; the old and middle English then compare a composition of the two with modern English, an extensive requirement of outcome one.
Secondly, the paper looked at the earliest recorded forms of English and its features followed by the Middle English that was used until the 15th Century than the modern English which is still used to date. This is primarily related to the second outcome, which serves to analyze literary texts to explain matters of historical significance.
Thirdly, the paper illustrates outcome number five which seeks to persuade that there is a significant utility in studying the history of English as a language and argues that the evolution of English is tied within the historical development of its current users (Algeo 157). Moreover, the paper illuminates the critical understanding of English and informs parents to make it a basic knowledge since doing so also creates a massive appreciation of not only the present but also the early evolution of their predecessors.
Paper Title: Critical 'Analysis of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa African.'
The paper clarifies outcome number one which seeks to analyze work from a different genre where it elucidates the non-fiction elements of the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavo Vassa, an African author who was sold into slavery during the colonial era (Anderson 443). The author has used sequencing of events and facts in chronological order as it illustrated the birth of Olaudah in the kingdom of Benin in 1745 when he buys his freedom in 1766 and settles in England in 1767 then the publishing of his book in 1789. The identification of non-fiction and the literary terms used in the text are the requirements of the first outcome.
Imagery and plot alignment have been used to explain matters of historical significance, an objective which relates to the second outcome, which serves to analyze the literary text of sociocultural and ethical importance in the book. The paper uses plot and imagery where the author enables his audience to use their senses of smell, sight, and hearing in explaining the theme of slavery and the challenges that the persona of the paper went through in his fight for freedom and release of Africans from captivity.
Also outcome number four has been illustrated through the manner in which the author seeks to effectively argue, persuade and inform when it informs the readers of the influence of Olaudah Equiano in the abolishment of slavery in Great Britain (Anderson 457). The writer argues that slavery is a bad thing charac...
