ENG 105 English Composition: Wondering about Community and Identity through Objects

Essay Instructions:

Your Home-Stuff, Yourself: Wondering about Community and Identity through Objects Objectives: Thematic—to consider issues within ritual, tradition, authenticity, souvenirs, object collection, symbolism and meaning, and the ways that communities contribute to individual identities. Technical—to develop composition skills in description, critical inquiry, contextualization, analysis, and essay organization. Task: In their complimentary essays, Michael Kimmelman and Leah Dilworth consider and explore some of the ways that individual and communal purpose and meaning can come from engagements with ritual, tradition, and material objects. Both authors present, question, and attempt to resolve practices that shape one’s sense of self, and one’s relationship with his/her society. It is here where your own exploration will begin. For this assignment, use the writings of Kimmelman and Dilworth as bases and models from which to consider your own self-construction and the ways that your community-of-origin/development has contributed to your identity thus far. With artifacts in your possession, or those that you can “collect” virtually, construct a Wonder Box like those Kimmelman describes, one filled with objects that represent you and some sense of your “authentic” (in Dilworth’s sense) self. Consider how you can employ Kimmelman’s and Dilworth’s critical moves to think deeply about the various significance of the items in your Wonder Box, looking for ways that the objects represent you, your personal community, and how the latter has shaped you. Then, compose a thoughtful essay that describes your collection and the individual/communal meanings that you can draw from it. Basically, your essay will answer the questions: What objects can allow you to describe and analyze your community-of-origin/development? How are these objects signals of an “authentic” sense of self? If they’re special souvenirs with meaning and importance to you, what does that say about you and your community? How do the objects in your Wonder Box reveal, for example, the culture, traditions, diversity, unity, and real or symbolic status of your community? How do these objects show your community’s impact on you as an individual and as a member of that group? How does your Wonder Box allow you to create “order from chaos,” or rather, a coherent sense of your community and yourself through seemingly disparate items? How does the process of “dwelling in the marvelous” aspects of these everyday objects lend them meaning and significance, both for you and for your community? Has written an article probably, want to write on the basis of the existing. Can rewrite the whole can also use some of the existing. Growing Up Collecting
I have always been fascinated by shells and that was even before I fully grasped the meaning of the word “collect.” People would see me walking around the beach as I look for shells and pick them up just because of my utter fascination towards them. I also enjoy cleaning the sands, and I carefully put the shells inside my pocket. As soon as I get home, I categorize them according to colors, shape, sizes, and places where I got them before putting them on the shelf. This is to make it easy for me to identify them when I want to recall the memories where I get each of them. Aside from the fun of collecting them, these shells give me a sense of relaxation because of their different designs and I when you put them on your ear, you could hear the sound of the sea from inside. It sounds so mysterious and blissful, but relaxing at the same time. To me, they are like humming a tune making them peaceful to hear.
Back then, it did not occur to me that collecting shells was an ambition that will later on develop in my life. I want to collect different types of shells and I always look for a new one every time I go to the beach. Each time I visit the shore, I always look for new shells that are not in my collection yet. Sometimes, I get similar shells and my ambition is to collect every kind of shell there is. I know that not all people would understand why I collect shells, but I think that people have their own hobby.
I became more self-aware because I collected shells and it is an interest that I will never lose. It made me reflect that on my strength to keep on pursuing no matter what happens and that time, I believed in collecting shells. Collecting beautiful shells give me excitement, and I get a lot of positive emotions the minute I see one. In addition, I met 2 kids on the beach who also love collecting shells. This means that they have a become a way for me to make new acquaintances that would later on blossom into friendship. If it were not for my interest in collecting shells, I will not meet those kids.
When I was 11, my mother gave me a stamp book that was published by the China Post at the start of the year in celebration of New Year. The stamp book’s thesis was the Year of Ox, which is one of the animal signs in the Chinese Zodiac. These signs will undergo one cycle every 12 years, which means that when a person turns 12, 24, or 36, the whole year will be considered his or her presenting year. The Year of the Ox is the year of my presenting, which is when I first got the stamp book from my mom. It was also my mother who advised me to collect Chinese Zodiac stamp books. This collection was actually my 2nd time to have an interest in collecting all because of my mother. I appreciated the beauty of these stamps even more whenever I look at them in the stamp book, and I will always be thankful to my mother for that.
I acquire new knowledge from these stamps and the design of the stamp book inside are different photos of China and Chinese Zodiac stamps. For instance, there are stamps that show the different bridges in China, lakes, and the entire map of China. Reading the stamp book gave me...
