The United States has been a nation famously built on immigrants, from almost every part of the world. The early years, especially just before and after the Civil War, the nation was experiencing a steady influx of immigrants from all directions, the South, North, as well as via sea. Of the many entry points was an Island that played quite a significant role in the history of the United States, the Elis Island. Ellis Island is a small piece of land on the periphery of the United States, bordering New York.
Lying on the side facing the Pacific Ocean, the Island opened up the American continent to the world. Even though it was not the main or the only entry point into the United States, Ellis Island offered access to most immigrants, especially those coming from Europe (Nickson). These included the British, Irish, Scottish and Eastern Europeans, such as the Italians and Greeks. From 1892 to 1924, the island acted individually as an immigration center for the U.S. Bureau of Immigration (Nickson). Millions of Americans trace the entry point of their descendants to Ellis Island.
