Introduction
Obesity is a condition where a human body has accumulated so much body fat or calories that it now starts to affect the person health negatively. The body mass index of an obese person ranges in between 24 and 30 thus considered overweight. Effects of obesity are not only personal but also affect the whole society at large (Ludwig, David & Pollack 533). This essay is going to look at the effects of Obesity on the society.
In the US alone there are over 71 million adults and over 11 million youth who are suffering from obesity. Obesity leads to several kind of chronic diseases that have long-term health consequences (Villareal, et al, 1849). In the US alone, the healthcare cost for obese people is estimated to be over $189 billion. The effect of this to the society is immense as the government spends more on obese people than other problems. Obese men alone use an additional $1150 yearly for medical spending, i.e. for prescription drugs and hospitalizations as reported by the journal of health economics (Stewart, Susan, Cutler & Rosen 2257).
The diseases that are caused by obesity are not only dangerous but are also very expensive to treat. The result is a high mortality rate among obesity people who may suffer sudden heart conditions (cardiovascular diseases) (Villareal 1849). These deaths cause a massive loss ...
