Effects of Different kind of Sources to a Conversation
Research is a very tedious process. It requires the researcher to exhibit a different kind of diligence in looking for various sources, filtering the unnecessary or untruthful ones, and synthesizing all the knowledge gathered into one coherent whole. Accordingly, the use of different kinds of sources in every step of the process could lead to affect the overall conversation in terms of its effect, trajectory, or results, to name a few. To demonstrate this, this article would focus on looking at how two different sources – (1) a documentary and (2) a research report – contributes to the conversation about Milwaukee and its lake. In line with this, the author believes that by using different kinds of sources in various parts of the research, the overall conversation would foster a better and deeper conversation throughout the whole research.
Summary of the Sources
The documentary entitled Milwaukee: A City Built on Water discussed history, as well as the difficulties that the city of Milwaukee faced through time, narratively. Specifically, it showed the role that Milwaukee river played in leading the city towards its present-day grandeur. For example, in the past, the rise of population and industries have led to widespread pollution and loss of biodiversity in the river (PBS.Org). Solid wastes are said to be towed and dumped directly in the river, rather than processed and recycled. In turn, this led to the loss of subsistence and massive floods that ravaged the city during storms. In contrast to this, subsequent efforts that focused on improving the water situation for subsistence, transport, and use have led to a significant boost to the city inhabitants’ quality of life. Overall, the documentary aimed to inform the viewers that the city wouldn’t have been as prosperous and thriving today if not for the river, thus giving it the name A City Built on Water.
In contrast to the previous source, the presentation entitled “‘Biological Hotspots’ of the Lower Milwaukee Estuary” provides both a narrative and persuasive approach to the importance of human intervention for the preservation of flora and fauna of the river. On the one hand, it is focused on the use of a narrative approach as it provides a factual and visual representation of the rivers’ and lake’s biodiversity. Both the research and the map shows that despite the ‘man-made’ characteristic of the bodies of water in Milwaukee, these features have encouraged the sustenance and growth of different species of fishes and other marine organisms. For example, the report noted how bluegills and largemouth bass spawning from the remnants of dead trees and concrete or how a discarded motorcycle has created a new habitat for small fishes (Egan).
On the other hand, the report is also persuasive as it focuses says that modern-day efforts of humans are essential in order “to plant...
