Literary Analysis of The Cask of Amontillado
Unlike other types of criticism, New Criticisms approach to the analysis of the text involves more in-depth scrutiny of the text itself regardless of any historical or external context. Simply put, this method focuses more on the literature as compared to the reader, author, and even the intention of each party in engaging with the piece. Mainly, a critique of this tradition means a closer ability to look for existing themes, symbolism, ironies among the different elements utilized in fiction writing. In order to fully understand this technique, this article would focus on the literary analysis of The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe.
One of the most noticeable aspects of this piece written by Poe is its use of the traditional form of fiction that starts with the 'beginning,' follows through at the 'middle,' and climaxes at the 'end.' In terms of the persona, Poe utilized Montresor, a first-person narrator, in order to develop the story. Although being the main character in the literature, Montresor is portrayed as someone that is capricious as he always justifies the unfortunate events that are happening to everyone. Even the slightest offense would make him so angry at others, as he said: "when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge" (Poe, 411).
