Du Bois Short Story: Of the Coming of John (1903)

Essay Instructions:

Where Du Bois's short story "Of the Coming of John" (1903) is a work of fiction, Wells's Southern Horrors (1892) is a non-fictive historical work. Discuss the two writers' depiction of "lynching, violence, and corporeal crimes against African Americans" at the turn of the twentieth-century. Do the authors seem to make similar or dissimilar claims about the justifications for and causes of lynching? How do their works address and refute common rationales for lynching? Explain.
