Plagiarism and academic integrity are closely related. Plagiarism is the practice of presenting someone’s work as your own without their consent while academic integrity is upholding honesty and acknowledging the work of others. However, Cultural relativism implies that cultural values and norms derive their meaning within a specific social context (Hawson, p 2). For instance, in middle-east countries, students are not expected to cite the source of their work because it is regarded that lecturers know everything. In contrast, students in western countries must reveal the source of their work because plagiarism is highly immoral. Based on these differences, any examination of plagiarism across different cultures should be done with an open mind because there is no absolute standard of moral or immoral.
