Deductive Analysis of "Trifle"
Trifle highlights the stereotypes, labels, and thought-patterns built around the inferior perception of women against men during the early half of the 19th century. Despite women being considered inferior, the evidence overlooked by men shows how women's perception during that age was based on a misperception.
In the play, three women repeatedly being neglected and looked down upon by their male colleagues symbolize women's suffrage during the age when the play was composed. The social functioning theory was at its peak of popularity during that period as women's role was deemed restricted to indoors while men were supposed to be suited to outdoor responsibilities (Jones 87). An example of how women suffered degradation is encapsulated in these words from Sheriff, "nothing here, but kitchen things." In this line, the word "nothing" stands for the inferiority attached to the role of the women. Indeed, the kitchen represents the women's territory that has an inferior connotation in men's lexicon of that time.
The evidence found by women has metaphoric importance. It reinforces the idea that the stereotypes and misconceptions are to blame for women's suffrage instead of their gender-specific competencies. They were no less than men in terms of foresight even thought their course of the investigation was different (Glaspell). The evidence of bird is the metaphor of how women approached life and its realities that were ignored by men.
