Beauty Beyond Life and Death
Every day, people live in fear of dying and not surviving. Despite dauntlessly facing the verge of this fear every single day, many people still die. Except for some, human beings cannot decide on when to live and when to die. Stories about life and death are evident in history, even in the literary past. And every story of life and death heard starts and ends differently in their own unique way.
In a novel written by Helena María Viramontes, entitled, “The Moth,” the narrator confronted her biggest dread when Abuelita dies. The narrator metaphorically compared death to the sun that rises up and sinks to the brink of extinction when it is finally vanquished and from this, fails to exist in a lifetime.
Here, the author brands death in a positive way where she recognizes the beauty of death beyond end; that is, the one who left and the one left behind will have to take new and temporary horizons where each of them is given a room for character development. Despite having this positive outlook, it is evident in the story that one must go through the process of grieving for grieving is the pathway to acceptance (Viramontes).
The narrator’s grief has been redirected to her longing for her mother, which helped build a secure emotional connection that she was never able to attain before Abuelita passed away. The narrator subtly realizes that sometimes, someone’s death may become someone else’s salvation (Viramontes).
