Breath, Eyes, Memory, written by Edwidge Danticat, is set in an impoverished village. It talks about two different cultures: Haiti and New York City, and is the story of a little girl, Sophie Caco, who migrates from Croix-des-Rosets to NY (the United States) to spend some days with her haunted mother Martine. During her stay there, the 12-year-old gets to know more about her identity and history. Initially, Sophie hesitates to reunite with her mother because she hardly remembers her. But with time, she realizes that there can be no alternative to a mother’s love and affection. In this novel, the author discusses how political violence can influence a person's life. It also witnesses the traditions and cultures that cause problems for an entire community. But more than this, Breath, Eyes, Memory is the historical overview of a mother-daughter relationship (Danticat 65).
Throughout the novel, the two main characters discuss incidents of their past. I feel that both Martine and Sophie should forget what happened to them in the history and move on. There is no use of telling the stories of her bitter past to her daughter. Instead, Martine should help her develop great interpersonal and communication skills. She should also talk about her present, her education and of course, her future. As is mentioned by Mehni and Masoumeh, this book reveals Haitian spirituality and folklore. Years ago, women used to be treated rudely and arrogantly in this part of the world. Men cheated on their beloveds and used them for physical satisfaction. Unfortunately, Martine came across the same problem, but she was not expected to tell the truth to her daughter (2011).
