Breath, Eyes, Memory, written by Edwidge Danticat, is set in an impoverished village. It talks about two different cultures: Haiti and New York City, and is the story of a little girl, Sophie Caco, who migrates from Croix-des-Rosets to NY (the United States) to spend some days with her haunted mother Martine. During her stay there, the 12-year-old gets to know more about her identity and history. Initially, Sophie hesitates to reunite with her mother because she hardly remembers her. But with time, she realizes that there can be no alternative to a mother’s love and affection. In this novel, the author discusses how political violence can influence a person's life. It also witnesses the traditions and cultures that cause problems for an entire community.
