Introduction
In the article written by SAMHSA.org, the author discussed about statistics and the risks that veterans face in terms of their mental and physical health. According to them in national statistical data taken all over the nation, veterans pose more risks amongst any other population when it comes to the chances of committing suicide. More particularly, the author stated that about 20% of the population of people who commits suicides are veteran soldiers including both male and female populations. In this article the author of this article would try to analyze two articles dedicated towards the discussion of suicide risks and the need for help provision for employees. More particularly, the author of this article would conduct the analysis based on how does the articles present their data and strategically use the appeal to rhetoric to get their point across. In the succeeding sections the author would also discuss how clearly do they present the pertinent facts and data regarding the subject matter? Nonetheless, the author believes that the while both of these articles have their own flaws, both of them have strengths in terms of their appeal to Plato’s three rhetoric – Logos, Pathos, and Ethos.
Differing Views on the Risks for Veteran Soldiers
The two articles utilized in this study are one that is written by SAMHSA.Gov and another one written by Smith, Robinson and Segal. While both of them have their own approaches in presenting the idea of sucide, the first one focused on the concept in relation to their connection and relationship with family members, while the latter focused on psychological trauma of their previous work. More particularly, in the article written by SAMHSA.gov, they focused on a more general approach in discussing why are veterans more vulnerable to the risks of sucide including factors such as trauma, crimnal injustice, and homelessness. This focus on the bigger picture also included the factor of community where they would stay after their service as well as the services that are dedicated for their healing and reintegration with the wider community. In contrasts to this, the other article discussed does not focus on the wider picture but rather on a single factor, which is PTSD (which was not discussed by SAMHSA). This article writen by Smith, Robinson and Segal, did not focus entirely on how to cope with community but rather the singular person and his psyche, as well how does the shock or his past job affects his way of thinking, feeling, and percieving the reality around him. In line with this, the author of this article that this presents the main difference between these to articles especially because while the first one focused on establishing community and provision of services, the other one believes that the role of psychiatrists are much important rather than self-healing.
