Here are the Instructions that my prof. posted: Since taking a timed writing assignment puts you in the situation of having a limited amount of time to create a focused, organized, well supported essay, you better have a clear plan of how you will use your allotted time before beginning this assignment.
One of the major skills that is being tested in a timed writing assignment is your ability to write to a prompt. A prompt is simply the writing task. In order to successfully respond to a writing prompt you must do the following:
1- Read the prompt carefully (and often several times), circling key words
2- Understand what it is asking
3- Identify how many parts there are to the question
4- Stay focused on a consistent central idea while answering the prompt.
The timed writing assignment for this class will be a 65 minute assignment and rely on an article usually adapted from a newspapers’ Opinion section. It will always tackle topics that are general knowledge based, therefore won’t need prepping as far as content.
The main approach is based on reading critically, identifying main points, and using your own observations and/or experiences to create a response.
PLEASE NOTE: After your article you will get 2 prompt (bullet points). You will answer both in one response. DO NOT RESPOND AS 2 DIFFERENT RESPONSES. THERE IS NO QUESTION #1 AND QUESTION # 2.
Suggested breakdown of time for the assignment:
10 min.Prewriting:
Read the prompt carefully, circling key words, underlining, annotating, note taking.
Cluster or list to determine your main supporting points and strongest evidence; be sure you have a working thesis and topic sentences.
Working thesis means you take a stance by agreeing OR disagreeing.

Write your essay following the outline.

Don’t forget your own view (yes, I can be used)
