Literature and Language: Compare and Contrast Male and Female Friendships
A friendship is a relationship type that involves two or more people who care about each other. A friend is expected to provide support in both good times and trying moments of life (Quindler, 2011). A friend is expected to call in times of need, a time of celebration, trying moments, and boring moments and at times put someone they refer as a friend first before them.
From life experience and research reports, there is evidence of many similarities as well as differences between male and female friendships. Although the differences are few, they are more emphasized that the numerous similarities that are associated with the two friendships. First, the females are more invested in their friendships than male. First, for the most or the whole part of male’s friendship, they tend to be less intimate and less supportive than friendships between the females. It is also evident that most female friendships are more fragile than friendships between males (Connor, 2010). The quality of male friendships is also highly influenced by the friendship patterns of their parents. With broad and active social networked parents, their sons tend to have more friendships.
As expected by most people, a common finding explains that male friendships are more “instrumental” and less emotional. On the other hand, female friendships are less instrumental and thus they are much more likely to share both emotions and feelings. Male’s friendships are often based on shared activities, for example hunting, poker or golfing (Connor, 2010). They also are more “transactional” and thus reciprocating the favors as well as team-working on their projects. In summary, when males share activities, females share feelings.
