Traditional narratives are anonymous and include fables, fairytales, tall tales, and other types of fiction. Fables are short allegorical narratives that make a moral point through the use of animal characters, who behave like human beings. Fairy tales are narratives set in a fantasy world and fantasy time without any expectation of literal belief. The stories involve both human characters and worldly things, such as wizards and witches. The heroes or the stories encounter improbable scenarios against various evil villains. In contrast, tall-tales are narratives that are based on a true story but are either changed or exaggerated. Fairy tales, tall tales, and fables teach relevant lessons in life, thus making them appropriate to children.
Fairytales are ideal examples of narratives about imaginary and magical beings and lands. Arguably, educators use descriptions in teaching children about different life aspects. Children deem fairytales as favorite because of their valuable lessons in life wrapped in a story. Fairytales teach relevant lessons on being in touch with nature, hence making them more appropriate for children. Notably, the narratives are fascinating since the readers can relate them to relationships, values, society, class, and relationships (Hurley 227). Fairytales can occur in either written or oral forms and connect to magic, including elves, godmothers, or any other supernatural characters. For that reason, the stories are more appropriate for children.
New versions of fairy tales have emerged to reflect cultural practices in different parts of the world. One of the primary reasons for using narratives among children is that they are significant in teaching various life aspects. Narrators and authors alike can interpret the stories in different ways to suit the needs of children from diverse backgrounds. Accordingly, children can use them to make the most appropriate decisions in life. According to Hurley, fairy tales center on universal themes, such as hard work pays, thus sending a message that children can overcome the issues in life and succeed in life (229). Although some of the narratives base their arguments on violence, children can use them in handling violence acceptably.
“Cinderella” is an example of a fairytale that involves a story of Cinderella, who lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters. However, she had to work extra hard so that the rest would have enough time to rest (McCarthy 65). For instance, she has to wake up early in the morning to start a fire.
