Comparative Analysis
Comparative analysis is used in comparing and contrasting 2 texts to determine the similarities and/or differences. This paper provides a comparative analysis of two different texts. These are Operation Mind Your Language by Pallavi Polanki and How Does Our Language Shape The Way We Think, by Lera Boroditsky. This comparative analysis paper focuses on content and rhetorical analysis features used by the authors. This is significant as it will shed light on the differences and/or similarities between the two articles.
The two selected articles are certainly different in terms of the themes of the content. In her text, Lera Boroditsky claims that languages shape how people think regarding objects, colors, time and space. She gives emphasis to the distinctively human gift of language and asserts it importance to human experience. She looks into whether the languages that people speak in different parts of the globe actually shape their view of the world, the way they think, how they see the world, and how they live their lives. She also examines whether learning a new language changes how a person thinks. Her findings demonstrate that people who speak diverse languages, in fact, think in a different way and that even flukes of grammar could greatly affect people’s worldview and how they see the world.
On the other hand, Pallavi Polanki in her text claims that the young people from Afghanistan who are being trained in India as English-language educators are filled with earnestness and eagerness. The training that the students are undergoing is collaboration on teacher education which the government of Afghanistan had with India that seeks to address the need for additional English educators in schools located in conflict areas of Afghanistan. The government of Afghanistan made an effort aimed at strengthening English departments at teacher training colleges and gave students scholarships to be trained in India as English teachers.
While the two texts are different in terms of themes in the content, they are similar in that both authors provide adequate evidence for supporting their claims. In Operation Mind Your Language for instance, Polanki has demonstrated how the students are very eager and enthusiast with their training in New Delhi, India. She talked to a 21-year-old student Abdul Hadi Hamdard who stated that although his English speaking is not very good, he is doing his best and that his English speaking has improved significantly considering that he was not able to speak any English while in Afghanistan. Abdul also noted that the Afghan students in India have the responsibility of learning the English language and then return to Afghanistan to instruct it in their schools (Polanki 169). She also talked to Mehrabuddin Wakman, a 22-year-old student who mentioned that for Afghan students, being able to speak the English language is their passport to a good job opportunity, a high pay, and even opportunities overseas (Polanki 169). Hakima Zainul Abedin, another student that the author talked to, stated that in her Afghan province of Helmand where she hails from, it is very hard for female students to go to school owing to the...
