Writing is defined as a combination of the physical and visual framework. Jay Bolter describes writing as a technology of the state of mind that becomes second nature (Bolter 2). It is a fact that writing can be referred to as a technology because it is a collective form of memory. Writing preserves the human experience. All forms of writing are complex; we can only understand written signs through the extended spaces used (Bolter 5). Each technology provides different space. Writing can also be the preserver and extender of other technologies. Writing is a sophisticated advanced technology because it requires skills to learn how to write (Bolter 3).
Ancient writing included scrolls, and writing was based on units appropriate to the rolls, rolls included columns. The Greek alphabet of Phoenician and the papyrus from Egypt served as writing materials (Bolter 7). Compared to medieval handwriting, modern printing uses paper. Printing has become the contemporary way of writing where texts are well organized (Bolter 9). Electronic writing offers computer spaces displaying texts generated from the electronic memory, where the text is stored.
Layers of sophisticated technology interacting with the writer and coded text in the background that makes modern writing become complex (Bolter 10).
