Coates's concept of the "American Dream"
According to Ta-Nehisi Coates, the American Dream, which he simply refers to as the Dream, consists of “perfect houses with nice lawns” as well as a general sense of well-being and prosperity that Blacks rarely attain (Coates 3). He also defines the Dream as talking white, acting white, and being white. Ta-Nehisi Coates also points out that the Dream is an addictive fantasy which spurs the usurpation and enslavement of the environment and black bodies (Coates 3). The Dream is not applicable to every American and this is a fact that is usually not recognized by the Dreamers. Those who are able to experience the dream comprise white people. What prevents Coates and his loved ones from achieving the same dream is systemic and personal racism. The dreamers comprise all Americans, including people of colour and Whites, who hold the belief that perseverance, good behaviour, and hard work are all that a person needs in order to attain the Dream.
