On the Period Formerly Known as Contemporary Amy Hungerford: A Response
Amy Hungerford, in her essay “On the Period Formerly Known as Contemporary,” argues that contemporary scholars are right in to acknowledge literature since 1945 and using it to project events in the contemporary society. Hungerford’s evaluation offers the basis of historicization of the contemporary literature in various ways that satisfy her assertions. I agree with the author that history forms part of the contemporary world. However, it cannot be used as a predictor of the future events in its entirety.
The current world system has significant resemblance to the ancient system, where some countries have continued with their traditional living principles, albeit in a modern way. For example, Hungeford states that, “On the American literary scene, pluralism defined the moment; in the international scene, sectarianism” (410).
