Choice is an important aspect in life without which no one can claim to have anything. The achievements as well as successes that people have are because of the choices that they have made in life. The steps that people take in life, including waking up in the morning, eating, walking, and speaking among other basic activities is as a result of the choices they make. Due to its importance and vital role on the life and self-esteem of an individual, it is paramount that people make the right choices to avoid negative consequences. In the poem ‘Choices’, Nikki Giovanni describes the different aspect of choice and how important it is to one’s self-esteem and life at large.
According to Nikki, it is important for people to do what they choose to do. This element applies on the job they may desire to do, what they want to have, where they want to go and what they want to express. However, in cases when people are not able to live as they choose, they enter into a form of slavery in which they just have to do what others command them. Verse 3 and 4 of the 4th stanza, to go . . . then i must . . . go, where the signs point, describes this element well. Positively, inability to get what one desires may teach them to be content and satisfied with what they want as verses 3, 4 and 5 of the 3rd stanza state: “my job is to want, what i've got, and be satisfied” (Nikki).
