Chaucer’s “Wife of Bath’s Tale”
During King Arthur’s day, a lusty knight comes riding from the river and sees a beautiful woman walking in solitary in front of him (Chaucer 282). The knight rapes her, an act that causes a stir and agitates the king to order for his death. In Arthur’s court, the queen and the other women beg the king to show mercy and spare his life. However, they demand that within one year, the knight should know the highest desires of women, and if the young man gets the correct answer, then his life would be spared. If he fails to identify this one thing that women most desire in life, then the knight will lose his life. Unfortunately, after a long struggle to crack the puzzle, the knight fails to find the answer.
An ugly and elderly woman later appears and offers to help the knight out of his misery, but on condition that he marries her. He feebly agrees and as they return to the King Arthur’s court, the old woman reveals that what women most desire...
