The Victorian era marks one of the most influential times in the British history. This is a period that formally started with the ascent of Queen Victoria to power in the year 1837. This also brought an end to the Romantic era. The Victorian era came with great strides in the society, with great changes that shaped Britain. Commerce and industry burgeoned as Britain grew in might among the rest of the nations in the region and even globally (Staff.washington.edu, 2016). This is an era that brought out the modernism theme in literature within the British literature and beyond. It was also an era that was marked with social and economic disparities (The Norton Anthology of English Literature, 2016).
