Pick a single passage from Speaking in Tongues (Smith) or How to Tame a Wild Tongue (Anzaldúa) that contains an intellectual problem you wish to explore (a problem can take the form of a tension, an ambiguity, a contradiction, or a site of possible misunderstanding). The passage can be as short as a single paragraph and should not exceed a single page. Make a claim about how the writer’s choices of language and form impact the argument. Your analysis should stay close to the text, using the methods and terminology we discuss in class.
The paper should be 1200-1500 words long (include a word count at the end of the draft).

● Identify a problem worth addressing, using a passage that will reward close reading .
● Formulate a claim that makes a strong argument and is not obvious.
● Establish a motive for the essay in your introduction . Here you will answer the “So
What?” question, suggesting why your essay is important and interesting to an intelligent
reader. Draw out the implications of the argument in your conclusion .
● Structure the essay around your central claim, making sure that each paragraph adds an
essential piece to your argument.
● Use evidence persuasively, quoting from the text when necessary, summarizing or
paraphrasing accurately and responsibly when appropriate. Do not provide evidence from other sources or make general assertions (e.g., claims about “human nature”).

Introduction
Language is a strong factor when it comes to communication. The choice of language in any given setting is what ensures people can understand the other. Different settings require their specific language for communication to be effective. In the first paragraph of the ‘Speaking in Tongues ‘passage by Zadie Smith, the contradiction or the intellectual problem that is seen is that of the author adopting a language while in college. As the author continues speaking, it is evident that the speaker is regretful for having left the childhood language and gotten to a new language that has a different voice as to what was the case during childhood (Smith). This article will investigate the intellectual problem of adapting a language that has made the speaker regretful for not speaking to the culture that existed before.
Adapting a language and leaving the childhood language that the speaker knew is a significant problem that the speaker seems to be troubled with. The speaker starts the passage by acknowledging that the new language that she is using has rounded vowels and consonants. One can interpret the use of such a voice of language in describing the speaker's new language as displeasing because of long words that are difficult to pronounce. The speaker seems to have grown weary of the new voice that she has been using of late, describing the new voice in her new language as 'Rounded vowels and consonants ‘ shows that the writer may have some difficulty in trying to communicate as compared to the easiness that was there before while using the childhood language (Smith). To the writer, changing from her initial voice seems to be troubling her leading to an intellectual problem.
In a loud voice, the writer says that the new voice of the language that she has embraced is not the voice of her childhood. Such a statement shows the regrets that the speaker has in leaving her childhood language and embracing a language that has a new voice. Furthermore, by claiming loudly that she believes that the new voice is not what she grew up by, it tells how much the writer is not happy for having a new voice. As much as she believes that using such a voice in college is at the right place, she is adamant that it has not been of help to her (Smith). The writer is of the idea that it would have been better to remain with her childhood voice. Such is an intellectual problem that the speaker faces of having taken a new voice in trying to communicate.
In another way to show her frustrations, the writer admits that she developed her new voice at college as a means of bald ‘social climbing’. Such a phrase shows that it was not the in-thing of the writer to change the voice, but she had to do so in order to be in another class socially. It is evident by the use of such a voice that the writer is facing an intellectual problem that she wishes she would be in a position to address. The writer sounds regretful for having gotten into something that no longer pleases her.
