Witnessing the hypocrisy and phoniness in the society, Holden wants to stay in his childhood forever and postpones the transition into adulthood. However, he eventually realizes that he must grow up and accept in spite of its in profession. In the story, the protagonist, named Holden Caulfield perceives the world as a very corrupted and bad place. He sees all the chaos, all the mischiefs and vices of society. Holden's story reflects the journey of becoming a mature adult in his own unique social environment. In his journey, he encounters many challenges such as troubles in friendship, women, personal beliefs and dogma and also attachments. Although Holden tries his best, his journey was challenging but in the end, these challenges were the only viable option of fate and life to truly indoctrinate Holden about those lesson of life.
One of the greatest influences upon Holden’s Life is his memory of his brother, Allie. Allie died from leukemia when he was 11 years old, and Holden was 2 years older than him. Holden’s remembrance and rendering of memories of Allie reveals that he idealizes him. In his descriptions, we can see that Allie was an excellent kid with the traits of being intelligent, nice, sweet and courageous. According to Holden, Allie was also very fun to be with due to his great sense of humor. Holden’s attachment to his brother, and his pain over his death has glorified Allie’s memory in Holden’s life as he recounts in this quote: “it wasn’t just that he was the most intelligent member in the family. He was also the nicest …. God, he was a nice kid, though” (Chapter 5.7).
In one instance in the book, The concept of the title can be seen in the reflection of Allie’s role of being the catcher of Holden whenever Holden suffers from his anxiety and fear that he harbors in his perception of society. “Anyway, I kept walking and walking up Fifth Avenue, without any tie on or anything. Then all of a sudden, something very spooky started happening. Every time I came to the end of a block and stepped off the goddam curb, I had this feeling that I'd never get to the other side of the street. I thought I'd just go down, down, down, and nobody'd ever see me again. Boy, did it scare me. (…) Every time I'd get to the end of a block I'd make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I'd say to him, "Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Please, Allie." And then when I'd reach the other side of the street without disappearing, I'd thank him. (Chapter 25.8)”
