TOPIC

You should choose one work (from the Middle Ages or Renaissance period) that we have not examined in class and comment on it by relating it to its historical/cultural context.

- It can be a painting, a piece of architecture, or a piece of literature (poetry or prose).

- It can also be a story from the Decameron (or a Canto from the Inferno) that we haven’t analyzed in class.

ARGUMENT

Your task is to discuss the work you picked, analyze its main themes, and relate it to its historical/cultural context. (What kind of issues does the work raise? How does it speak of its times?) Make sure you talk about the style of the piece: not only what it says, but also how it says it.

Please have a clear argument and some structure. Poorly designed, sloppily executed essays will get you a poor grade.

FORMAT, LANGUAGE & STYLE

DRAFT AND REWRITE

You will turn in your first draft, then revise/expand your draft into a final version (1,000 words) using my feedback as guidance! Late drafts will cause your final paper to be marked down.

PLEASE NOTE: “First draft” does not mean “unfinished” or “sloppy”.  Students are expected to do their best on their first draft and read over what they have written one or two times in order to catch careless mistakes.

LATE WORK, ETC.

Late work will be docked 10% for each class period it is late.

Do not plagiarize. Plagiarized work (whether or not "intentional") and other forms of cheating will receive a 45% maximum, because it is as if the work had not been done. If you do feel that you need to borrow other people's words, make it brief (two or three sentences tops) and, most importantly, make it absolutely clear that you are quoting (i.e. use quotation marks and indicate author, work, and date in a footnote). Using other people's words without citing the source constitutes plagiarism.

The Renaissance Period is critical in human history. It represents the opening of a new chapter in art, culture, and knowledge. It prompted fresh thinking and elicited the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature, and art; this was accompanied by the realization of travel, style, and inventions.
