Name: Professor’s Name: Course: Date: Our Blind spot about Guns On February 14, 2018, there was a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School, and this scourge led to the death of seventeen people while seventeen others were wounded. The numbers provided did not include the number of students whose lives will forever be changed by the events of this sad day. Currently, the debate about guns and gun control laws are at an all-time high, but as is always the case, the gun lobbyists seem to be winning. In his July 30, 2014, essay titled Our Blind Spot About Guns, Kristof offers a unique take on the matter as he tries to show how the country can approach the issue of guns. Looking at the number of lives being lost annually, one is inclined to agree with his assertions and motivation. Kristof first talks of identifying where the problem is. He uses the example of cars and the problem the country once had when thousands of people were killed by cars. The problem he notes was the cars but more so the people themselves. Once this was made clear, it became easier to find a fitting solution. From the article, it is clear that regulating guns and people does not imply taking guns away from the people. Unlike what gun lobbyists are often heard saying, introducing new regulations is only a way of looking out for ourselves. Like cars, it is now obvious that guns are being used to kill and maim people. People from all walks of life are having their dreams and lives cut short by people who do not seem to care about the right to life. Therefore, it is only fitting that something is done to help prevent any more deaths. However, nothing can be done with the weak and often wobbly Congress...
