What the Authors are Trying to Tell Us
A lot of the stories that are part of sudden fiction tell a story about the relationships of men and women. After a person reads the stories, it can be stated that they all tell the same message. 13 stories were read to prove that the authors are pertaining to the challenges in a relationship a couple may face that happens later on. In these stories, there are themes of estrangement, violence, despair, grief and others.
In the story entitled “Popular Mechanics”, there is conflict, separation, struggle and lack of communication between the couple. Early in the story, readers can already see the distance between them. The girlfriend or wife likes the idea of her husband leaving because the story begins with a male packing a suitcase. However, the reader will never know why they separated, but it is clear that the issue is unresolvable. On the surface of “Say Yes”, it is evident that the story is connected to racism, and it points out the opposition to an interracial marriage. Ann and her unnamed husband are both white. They have disagreements and nothing gets fixed, and they continue to fight for their relationship. The majority of the story questions if two people that come from different backgrounds can really love each other with great depth and meaning. They do not give convincing arguments and both have different ideals of love that they cannot overcome so the tension between them only worsens. The story of “Tent Worms” portrays a wife with depression who is struggling against the emotional instincts she has. The story becomes a mirror of her failing marriage and the deteriorating condition of her husband who is getting closer to death. In the story, there are only three characters – Billy and Clara Foxworthy, and an unnamed doctor. There is a verbal conflict that grows them apart because they failed to resolve it, and this leads to more events in the story. These three stories all highlight the events in a marriage that cause it to fail. The man and woman in the relationship both have issues they need to fix so that it will work again. Both of them have to work hard to overcome the complications they have encountered before.
The story of “Dinner Time” begins with a man waiting for his wife to serve him dinner and then he starts to hear trouble in the kitchen. He discovers that his wife is beating pans and this causes him to hit himself. He ends up being unconscious and wakes up to the sound of her throwing the china and dinner on the floor. Since the food is already ruined, the husband starts eating one of this hands because of extreme hunger and then eats himself. There is violence in this short story which is similar to where “Anatomy of Desire” was based on because during the earlier years of the Aztec society, they will choose a young virgin to represent the grain goddess as an offering, but she is killed after the ritual, prayer, and fasting are over. Similar to the violence in how the ritual was done, the “Anatomy of Desire” is more disturbing because it begins and ends with misery and foolishness. Hanley, the ...
