Cultural assimilation is the process whereby a culture or a minority group of different ethnic heritage comes to be absorbed into the leading or dominant cultural heritage of a society. Other concepts portray cultural assimilation as same as acculturation: Cultural modification of a person, people or group by fitting in or borrowing traits from a different culture. Efforts to make the minority groups assimilate have occasionally occurred in world history. Cultural assimilation has benefits and challenges as well in society.
BENEFITS OF ASSIMILATION
Immigrants Health is Improved. Assimilation causes some families of immigrants to get rid of certain customs. When immigrants adapt and borrow other customs from the dominant group, they get rid of customs and practices which are by its nature unhealthy, to begin with (Jasen 59). Even when festivities of community union, life-cycle transformations, or local custom values practiced for ages are involved, there is no assurance for success.
Female genital mutilation is an extensive practice which is abolished through the condition of assimilation. Minority women suffer the most because they are subjected to genital cutting, but because of assimilation, this practice is removed (Volpp 1183). The sufferings of FGM procedures may be caused by viral and bacterial infections (Elliot et al. 2). Various societies prefer sons such that daughters are neglected, left unlearned or killed (Ellis 1-5).
Enables People to beat their Natural Dissimilarities. In Society, men and women have natural differences that define their roles: Intelligence, capabilities, disabilities, and eyesight. These qualities define the opportunity at a personal level. Assimilation causes different societies to settle their differences. When a society decides to assimilate, they are prompting everyone to include themselves within a community which operates only when everyone works jointly (Vargas 7).
