The Artwork Assignment: A Collection Of Fifty Photographs

Essay Instructions:

Jeff Wall is an important contemporary artist, known for making staged, large-scale images that reference art history, literature, and pop culture. His piece A Sudden Gust of Wind (After Hokusai) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.(1993), was based on a famous print (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. by Japanese artist Hokusai (1760 - 1849), which Wall recreated in his native Canada. Although it appears to be a photograph of a single moment, it was actually created from 50 separate images, captured over a period of 5 months and spliced together to create an artificial but realistic scene.
Content:
Write a short essay discussing this piece; essays should be 2-3 paragraphs, 300 - 500 words in length. Essays should address how the artwork incorporates many of the concepts addressed in this week's reading and class work (=Time and Motion), including but not limited to: actual and implied time, recorded time, narrative, and scope. Where relevant, also include concepts from past chapters, such as the elements and principles of design.
1. The first paragraph introduces the work and describes it formally (what is depicted?, subject matter, (Always assume, you are describing the artwork to someone who does not see it. Can the other person get an idea what you are talking about based on your description? ) ), drawing from the interpretive vocabulary addressed up until this point in the course. (the focus in regard to formal elements lies in the interpretation of time and motion; see above)
2. The second paragraph interprets the artwork, supporting the interpretation with what is known about, or can be seen in, the artwork. (Don't forget to take into consideration that this image is based on a pring by Hokusai).
The link to the image also contains information about the artwork. Rewriting the paragraph for your paper will not be sufficient.
Format: Upload your essay in document or pdf form.
Grading will follow the attached writing rubric focusing on the quality of writing (grammar and form), comprehensiveness, detail, and insight demonstrated by the student.

The A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai), is photograph that is quite colorful and is displayed in a light box. Much of the landscape that is featured on the photograph is flat. In the foreground are four people spread-out on what looks like an earthen path. On the left, the person is seen to hold some of the pieces of paper that are now being blown away by the wind towards the foreground center of the photograph. The second person moving towards the right is crouched as they move away into the right. The third person at the middle of the photograph is seen to look up into the air as if looking at the papers that are now blowing over his head. The fourth person that is seen on the right of the photograph is crouching towards the left and seems much further into the middle ground of the photograph. In the middle ground of the photograph is the channel that is filled with water and banked on the sides with hips of soil. On either side of the channel are plain or flat grounds that seem like playgrounds with red earth exposed, especially on the left.
This is a photograph that generated from a collection of other photographs which Wall had taken over a period of time. To be more specific, the photograph was a result of merging a collection of fifty photographs that had been collected over a period of five months. As such, this is piece that had a lot of...
