According to Butler a watch list targeting with professors and lecturers perceived to be liberal is not only an attack on freedom of speech, but potentially disruptive to those affected. Recently, conservative groups highlighted their underrepresentation in institutions of higher learning going to the extent of singling out those with liberal and unorthodox views. Butler is surprised by the turn of events as she is a professor of religion, who has sought to get the opinions of people with different viewpoints. The watch list is likened to a witch hunt for those who appear on it are likely to be discriminated. Some of the professors do not even know that their names have appeared on the watch list, and once they are mentioned they are at risk of being harassed and intimidated. Surprisingly the link between conservative college publications and news media is greater than thought, and professors are keenly watched by these media sources. Despite the supporters of the watch list stating that they sought to eliminate bias and abuse in colleges and universities, singling out the professors means that they can be silenced for their views, religious or their political stance. Groups like Turning Point USA have been established in American high schools and universities with the aim of promoting right wing viewpoints and engage education stakeholders.
