Length: 750 words minimum
Sources required: 2
Additional Requirement: Essay must be written in third person
Write an essay of 750 words that uses any of the three patterns studied in this unit: exemplification, cause and effect, or argumentation. You may also mix the patterns to achieve your best outcome. The topic choice is yours. Be sure to indicate which pattern/s you are using in your header under the date. The essay must be written in third person.
Two sources are required for this essay (you may use more if you wish). Be sure your sources are reliable and remember that you may not use Wikipedia or any blogs as sources. You must follow MLA format for in-text citation and the works cited page. Refer to your handbook for information on MLA citation. Please remember that failure to cite properly can result in a plagiarism charge. If you are having problems, ask me or visit the Learning Center for help. Not using sources or omitting the works cited page will result in a penalty of 10 points off the essay grade.
You may write more than 750 words, but do not write less or your grade will be lowered. The amount of points lost will depend on how short the essay is and is at my discretion. Consider the following as a guideline: the amount of points deducted will not exceed the percentage of words missing from the required word count. If you wish to contest the amount deducted for length, you must email me a copy of your essay so that I can see the actual word count minus header and works cited. If you do not use sources or have a works cited page, you will lose 10 points. Likewise, if you submit a works cited page with just urls as sources, you will also lose 10 point as that is not MLA citation.
Please do not use too much complicated grammar and long words.

Cause and Effect Essay- Crime
One of the major challenges facing society today is crime. The choice of some people to engage in criminal activities such as robberies, murders, and theft has affected the lives of people significantly. This essay examines the causes and effects of crime. In the school setting, the students that do not meet the expected standard may decide to join criminal gangs where they earn status and respect (Jrank.org). When they join such gangs, engagement in crime earns them credibility. The peer influence of gang members, therefore, makes them engage in crime.
Crime is also caused by drug abuse. According to Jrank.org, drugs and alcohol impair the judgment of individuals, thereby increasing their courage to engage in criminal activities. As people take drugs, they may develop an addiction and this turn increases their need to commit a crime. Such individuals commit crimes in order to support their habit. For example, if a person is addicted to cocaine and they do not have money to purchase the drug, they may be forced to engage in crime to finance their addiction. According to Jrank.org, when a person is drunk or high, aspects such as breaking the law or prison sentencing have little meaning. Furthermore, drugs and alcohol may make a victim more vulnerable to crime. Such a person may be an easy target for criminals because they are not sober.
Parental neglect is also a major cause of crime. When children are neglected by parents at a young age, they are more likely to engage in crime when they grow up. When young people are neglected by parents, they become careless when it comes to house chores, cleanliness, and academics (Secureteen). In this sense, the role of parents in the development of their children determines how they will turn out to be when they grow up. When parents fail t...
