The author generously illustrates a number of influential writings by John Baines on two major areas of early Egyptian civilization. One is the role of writing. Back then, the role of writing was very different from the roles that it carries today. It was used to mark important dates in the Egyptian calendar, which they used to determine which season of the year it was. Writing in Egypt helped in the documentation of important events. It was also used for religious purposes that are to reserve religion. The other major issue in Egyptian civilization is the importance of visual culture. The author uses a few case studies to answer the questions of the role of writing and the importance of visual civilization. The article assembles previous publications from different disciplines hence providing core contributions to the problems related to theories and comparisons of ancient Egyptian history. The article provides other topics of interest that still require further explanations and research. The article fully utilizes three full articles with an interdisciplinary approach. The author also states the religious practices of early Egyptian inhabitants. Moreover, he states how they incorporated writing to religion. Visual culture was also important in ancient Egypt since Egyptians were colorful people.
