MLA Title page and Works Cited required with a minimum of TWO outside sources
Choose an issue or aspect in the novel Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, and write a collaborative research essay that puts forth an argument about
an aspect of the story asserting your interpretation of its significance. Do not simply summarize the story. Make an argument about the book that you
would need to prove or convince your reader of. Use questions like these to guide you: What do you think your reader could learn or better understand
from reading this story? What do you think of the complex character of Enrique? Did Nazario make a good choice of a person to represent the challenges
of the migrant experience? Why do you think the author undertook this project? What do you think of her motivations and her approaches? What is your
opinion on the migrant experience after reading this book? Should anything be changed? How?

Analyzing Enrique’s Journey
There are many angles from where we can draw rich lessons from the story of Nazario’s Enrique’s Journey. We can look at it from the angle in psychology such as abandonment and the search for security; from the angle of social institutions such as the importance of the family; or even from the personal angle of overcoming odds and pursuing your goals. However I believe the readers can also draw rich lessons by looking at the issue from a social and structural angle which created the phenomenon of South America’s migration into the United States and the social and historical creation of structural poverty in Latin America. Society may call Enrique as a illegal migrant, a thief, a bum, a beggar, and a drug addict but what do we call a society that created thousands of Enriques in the first place. This is a unique and yet important perspective that readers could explore and learn from in the story. At most part we are touched by Enrique’s personal story of his struggles and wanting for a better life but seldom did we question the society that created the phenomenon of Enrique. Enrique is just a representation of hundreds of thousands of nameless migrants suffering various indignities because they happened to be born in a society that creates poor people by the hundreds of thousands. This is not to mention the hundreds of millions condemned into abject poverty in Latin America who did not even dare to cross the borders. Why is the United States so rich and Latin America so poor? This is not simply a stroke of destiny or a mistake of fate that created this situation but caused by hundreds of years of historical colonization and oppression of the Latin American peoples.
The Sad Statistics
Nazario states in her prologue that every year there 700,000 illegal migrants into the United States and there are a million others who legally migrate to the United States from South America ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "author" : [ { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Nazario", "given" : "Sonia", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" } ], "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2006" ] ] }, "publisher" : "Random House", "publisher-place" : "California", "title" : "Enrique's Journey", "type" : "book" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=bd08084b-adea-49fa-9c5f-b571e7855e9d" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "formattedCitation" : "(Nazario)", "plainTextFormattedCitation" : "(Nazario)", "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Nazario)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" }(Nazario). What accounts for this phenomenon? Why is it that the United States is the land of dreams and that South America is the land of nightmares? What is the economic system that will have to account for such phenomenon. Why are Latin American countries called the Banana Republics reduced into agricultural system and economically dependent on the United States for imported products. Why are there no decent jobs in Honduras while there is a demand for nannies in the United States. Why are the wages so ...
