Format: You will need to complete two different tasks: (1) summarize the text’s argument (no more than one paragraph) and (2) explain how the text’s argument is put together (at least three paragraphs).
In the summary section, you will need to first introduce the text you will be analyzing. Then you will summarize what the text argues, noting the central claims and key evidence. Do not re-tell the entire article, just the main points.

For this essay, you will analyze the author’s audience and purpose. What is the author’s purpose for writing the essay? Who is the author’s target audience? Does the author effectively reach that audience? In your analysis, you will need to examine how the author achieves his purpose with the target audience. Other the=igns to consider are: tone, organization, thesis, use of evidence.
The essay needs to be double spaced. Use MLA style documentation for both in-text citations and the works cited entry. The paper needs to be written in third person. No more than 10% of the paper may be direct quotes. Select quotes carefully as they should be used to support your ideas rather than pad your paper. The essay needs to be written in present verb tense.
In your essay you will need to:
clearly identify the title of the literary work and author in the introduction of your analysis
have a hook that captures the reader's attention
have a clear thesis to indicate the focus of your analysis
include at least one short direct quote per body paragraph - this helps to establish a strong connection between your ideas and the work itself
use strong transitions to move the reader from one point to the next.
Before you start the essay take notes over what you have read. Highlight and annotate the literary work. In an analysis when you highlight and annotate it is the same as gathering information from sources when writing a research paper. You may consider your ideas valid as long as you can support those ideas with evidence from the literary work

Rhetorical Analysis Paper
Are taxes imposed upon sugar and other sugary commodities the panacea for obesity and diabetes? This question is perhaps one of the biggest mysteries that policymakers try in order to understand to encourage the citizens to live a fitter and healthier lifestyle. In this article, I would discuss the article written by Donald Marron entitled “Should Governments Tax Unhealthy Foods and Drinks? (Updated)”. Marron argued that although taxing sugar and its derivatives is a good way to reduce the never-ending issues of obesity and diabetes, policymakers need a more in-depth knowledge about the relationship between these variables to bring about significant and long-lasting change. Finally, the main focus of this article is to show why Marron’s claims are very convincing and appealing to its audience. Since his target audiences are both professionals and policy-makers who read ‘Forbes’, I believe that the main strength of his argument lies in his use of logic (logos).
Rhetorical Analysis
           One of the reasons why Marron’s claim is appealing is because of his use of evidentiary facts across different settings. In his article, it could be seen that the author has presented verifiable evidence that other countries have already resorted to taxing sugary drinks. He even noted some other prosperous and wealthy countries that have adopted the same including “Denmark, Finland, France, Hungary, and Mexico” (Marron). Additionally, he also provided other instances of the applicability of his idea. First, he noted a parallel example in the United States, which is in the form of a local tax that imposes the same kind of tax in these commodities. Second, he also reiterated how Mexico’s use of sugar tax has become effective by taxing based on volume rather than quantity alone. Accordingly, it could be seen that the author has strategically used these kinds of evidentiary examples in order to show his audience that taxing sugar works. It is similar to a form of ‘logos’ wherein the author has appealed to the logic of his readers by making them think that if it works on other countries and is applicable in the United States, then it should work at the national level.
