My response to An Inconvenient Truth, a documentary featuring Al Gore talking about global warming
My response paper will be on a documentary film called An Inconvenient Truth. This is a documentary film by Davis Guggenheim that centers on Al Gore, an American politician-turned environment champion who at one time contested unsuccessfully for the United States presidency. In the documentary, Guggenheim follows Al Gore in his lectures where he seeks to raise awareness on pollution, climate change and global warming; our contributions to it and the dangers that they bring (Guggenheim). Al Gore seeks to raise awareness and motivate us all to do something to prevent the rapid slide of the effects of pollution on our environment. He does this using not only his charm as a lifelong politician but also cold facts presented by scientific evidence. By combining the two, he is able to capture his audience and present his case of what he believes to be the single most pressing issue affecting the human race presently. My reaction is the compelling way Al Gore is able to put his message across in the documentary.
One of the ways I found the documentary to be a compelling anti-global warming ambassador is through the use of statistical tools, imagery and other scientific evidences in Al Gore’s speeches. When he talks, Al Gore uses charts, maps, pictures of the earth to prove his points. To show the destructions we have done on our environment, Al Gore shows pictures of different areas and how they have been ravaged over time because of global warming. These can be pictures of collapsing ice shelves and glaciers that are disappearing. To elicit even more from the crowd, he shows pictures of polar bears that are dying because their environment is getting warmer too fast for them to adjust. On his use of maps and charts, Al Gore utilizes charts and other statistical data to show the progress of global warming. These he uses to show how much further an area is being decimated by global warming. He also uses numbers to show an increase in occurrence of extreme weathers. These range from storms, record high temperatures and floods. For the more extreme, he uses animation to show how rising sea levels are affecting the delicate ocean ecosystem. For those who get bored with serious looking scientific charts, Al Gore utilized use of cartoons to drive his point home.
