Ability to Adapt to Situations
There are many ways through which an individual can adapt to a specific situation. These ways depends on the persons view about what they need to adapt to. Golding was able to create a scenarios showing how people can adapt to the situation described in the lord of flies. Therefore, the creation of a new situation and response to authority are some of the ideas used by Golding in regard to adapting to a situation.
The initial step for an individual adapting to a certain situation is for them to be in a case that they have never been in before (Sharrock 2014). Golding makes this possible through the creating of a scene whereby, a plane crashes in an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. “The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away. Once there was this and that, and nowóand the ship had gone.” (Golding79). This would, in turn, create a situation whereby the survivors will have to come up with ways of surviving before they could get any help “Jack had to think for a moment before he could remember what rescue was.” (Golding 46). Therefore, regarding their adaptability, they realize that the island has wild pigs and other plants that they could use for food “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (Golding 168). As well, the author creates a situation whereby the survivors had to use traditional means of communication such as smoke to attract the attention of passing cruises. This idea of creating a situation to adapt to help in the propelling of the novel. The crashing of the plain is the backbone of the story because the rest of the events come up as a result of the crashed plane.
