The Story is about Ann Howard; she is a 33-year-old young mother, who married a successful man called Howard. Carver, the poet, explains to us that when Ann goes to order a birthday cake for her son Scotty, she is jubilant and gladly anticipates that day. Ann orders her cake at the Pantry Bakery. From the dialog between Ann and the backer, there is a sign of a sense of connection. In her mind, she seems to wonder if the Baker had children and from his countenance as she tried to be friendly, the baker was rather abrupt to her but not rude.
She had pre-planned her son’s Birthday by ordering the cake three days before the day arrived. Sadly one day as her son was playing around with her friend by the roadside; a driver hit the little boy and took no responsibility for the action but drove off. Amazingly the little boy manages to get up and take himself home but is soon rushed to Hospital by his mother after an ambulance is called to get little Scotty.
The theme of isolation is very evident from the story. As we see Baker had no children, wife, family, relatives at all. In fact, when he worked at the bakery Carver doesn't mention that he had any assistant he was bound to his job. The Baker worked sixteen hours a day to make ends meet. After Scotty's accident, there is a sense of helplessness by what Howard and Ann at the Hospital have to rely on DR. Francis for information concerning their child.
All they seemed to do was just wait that Scotty wakes up. Franklin's parents, on the other hand, face the same dilemma as depicted when Ann is looking for an Elevator the mother of Franklin at first glance is desperate to know how their son is doing.
The theme of communication is then brought out by Carver by what when the Baker is calling He hung up more than once in her. Dr. Franklin is unable to give definite feedback to Ann sinc...
