A Good Man Is Hard To Find And the Necklace
The literary analysis provides a person with an opportunity to critique, analyze, or compare different works. Similarities and differences can be best understood by analyzing the themes, characters, and settings presented in the various works. In this case, Flannery O'Connor's short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find, reveals the story of a protagonist character named as the grandmother. The grandmother is presented as a proud person through the setting of traveling to Florida. As well, Guy de Maupassant's story The Necklace express a protagonist character, namely Mathilde. Mathilde is a character who is always yearning for material things to maintain her social class. The authors use different settings to narrate the actions of both characters. Therefore, the similarities are created through the actions of both characters.
In both stories, the protagonists are expressed as proud people, which brings about the theme of pride. It is through their pride that results in the downfall of the characters. Flannery outlines the character of the grandmother as someone who is boastful and has a lot of determination in getting anything that she wants. For instance, when the family plans on traveling to Florida, she is unwilling to go through with the plan and chooses to visit Tennessee first. She comes up with false information about a killer who is on the loose in Florida, thus urging the family not to go. She also claims that the house in Tennessee has silver. "and the story went all that all the family silver was hidden in it when the Sherman came through, but it was never found" (O'Connor 3). Such is the extent of the lies that she was willing to make to prove her point. However, she realizes that the family was not going to buy their story and hence, chooses to claim that the children have been in Florida. Her excuses are an indication of a boastful person, willing to do anything to convince people to do things our way. As well, Mathilde is expressed as a proud person who desires parties, wealth, and comfortable life. As a result, she ends up becoming bitter because she cannot afford the luxurious life that she has always yearned for. At some point, she demands money from the husband for her to set a one-night party with rich friends. Her pride pushes her into borrowing a necklace from Madame Forestier and forces the husband to buy her a new dress so as to depict class. Mathilde is willing to do anything that meets her desires, regardless of the harm that it causes other people. Therefore, both characters are expressed as proud people and are willing to do anything that would meet their desires. All they care about is their happiness, despite the harm that it may cause those around them.
