Reflection on Chapter 5:
Geographies of Race and Ethnicity
As I read through the article written in Chapter five of the book, what strike my interest initially is the difference between Race and Ethnicity. According to Domosh et. at, Race refers to the apparent difference in physical characteristics and other physiognomic traits that are believed to be caused by differences in genetics, while Ethnicity could refer both to these genetic differences and the similar history and cultural norms that people share. What’s interesting about this is that most of the time, both of these concepts are used interchangeably, that indicates that these are ‘almost similar concepts’. However, what I noticed is that both of these concepts both carry normative and negative connotations depending on the context where they’re used. For example, differences in ‘race’ and discrimination against it are negative in the American context. On other countries, however, differences in Ethnicity (more especially minor ethnic groups) also carries negative connotations which see the minorities as either backward or primitive. Nonetheless, globalization has still imposed change for both of these notions. As groups (ethnic and/or racial) become closer and closer to each other, the more dominant ones tend to subsume the less dominant ones and change it, whether ...
