Vitamins are organic chemical compounds that provide nutrients to living organisms. In humans, the vitamins are required for normal cell functions of the body. It should be noted that vitamins are essential in the human body, and the body is not able to produce them, so they are ingested (Jennings, 2014). Antioxidants are substances that lower the concentration, absorption, or prevent the oxidation of a substrate ( Morales- Gonzalez,2013). In this paper, I will discuss the importance of vitamins and antioxidants to the human body. Antioxidants are important to the body as they help prevent and manage illness that is caused by oxidations. The paper will further evaluate the similarities between vitamins and antioxidants.
The human body is a host of various biochemical reactions. The biochemical reactions are affected by various factors like the environment, and whatever is ingested in the body. In the biology of human beings, the system contains various free radicals which are highly reactive with other chemical molecules. The free radicals in humans are molecules that are categorized as reactive oxygen species(ROS), reactive nitrogen species(RNS), and reactive sulphur species(RSS)( Morales- Gonzalez,2013). The reactions of the free radicals cause what is known to as the oxidative stress to the body. Oxidative stress is usually the cause of many chronic illnesses like cardiac illness and cancer. Therefore, it is important to conclude that both vitamins and antioxidants help to prevent illnesses in humans.
In the human cells, there is the formation of free radicals both in enzymatic and nonenzymtic reactions. The oxidative stress can be neutralized through the enhancement of cellular defense in form vitamins or antioxidants. The reaction mechanism of vitamins and the antioxidants are closely related. Vitamins and antioxidants are made up of aromatic ring structures and can delocalize with the lone pair of electrons of the free radicals.
Vitamins as antioxidants. The reaction mechanism of various vitamins proves that vitamins are similar to antioxidants. There are thirteen vitamins named as vitamin A o vitamin E. the chemical and molecular approaches have been used to study the mechanism and kinetics of vitamins as antioxidants. The vitamins in metabolic reactions act by reacting and forming a stable complex with free radicals, thus preventing cell damage and hemostatic disruptions.
