Argument Comparison Essay - Fluoridate Drinking Water

Essay Instructions:

Unit 3: Argument Comparison Essay
Assignment Description:
You will choose a debatable topic, hopefully related to your own interests (academic or personal) and research arguments on both sides of said topic. These articles can oppose each other directly or argue slightly different positions. They shouldn’t argue for exactly the same thing. Your goal is to perform a thorough investigation of how both articles present and support their claims, judging their strategy and effectiveness. You should ask, how much substance does this argument have? How persuasive is this argument? What makes it persuasive? Why?
You must make a claim about which article is more legitimate and/or persuasive and support this thesis.
Some potential topics you may explore and questions you can consider:
A. Social Media and Smartphones, e.g. Will Social Media Help or Hurt Your College and Career Goals?
B. Technology in Schools and the Future, e.g. Are Self-Driving Vehicles the Wave of the Future?
C. Gender Issues, e.g. Why Aren’t There More Women in Leadership Roles?
D. Business, e.g. Is Amazon Becoming Too Powerful?
E. TV, Movies and Video Games, e.g. Does TV Capture the Diversity of America Yet?
F. Music, Literature and Art, e.g. Do We Still Need Libraries?
G. Health and Nutrition, e.g. Should the Legal Age to Purchase Tobacco Be Raised From 18 to 21?
Prompt:
Use the XXX Library to find two articles with different arguments related to a topic of your own interests and compose an essay where you analyze the main claims from each position, evaluate how each position is supported, and determine which side’s argument is more legitimate. This should include the authors’ voices, structures, rhetorical modes and biases. You should seek to explain how other people supported their claims and tried to convince their audiences. Two sources from XXX’s electronic databases are required for this assignment.
Tasks:
1. Identify and define your main argument in the essay (thesis): which article/argument is more persuasive/legitimate and why.
2. Compare and contrast both articles: claims, evidence, rhetorical methods.
3. Support your argument with reasonable and logical evidence from your sources.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of your sources and of theoretical ideas discussed in class.
5. Include a Works Cited page that adheres to MLA guidelines. Make sure that all sources are documented appropriately.
Requirements:
This paper must be no more or less than 3-5 pages, typed (Times New Roman, 12pt. Font), and double-spaced. Use 1’’ margins on all sides of the page, and include your last name and a page number in the header of all pages.

The argument on Fluoridated Drinking Water
Introduction
The use of fluoridation and fluorides in drinking water has raised concern in public health thus bringing about a controversy debate on its benefits and harms. Considering both positive and negative perspective, researchers have raised their concerns depending on their opinion and researches conducted. For instance, Cathy Alty argues that fluorine and fluoride compounds have health benefits to human health when used in drinking water. On the other side, Stephen Peckham and Niyi Awefeso argued that there are huge negative impacts of fluorides to the human body when applied in drinking water that outdo positive impacts. The discussion herein provides controversial arguments on the impacts of fluorides in drinking water as presented in different articles as per the author’s arguments.
In the article “Filtering out fluoride: When the public questions fluoridation, the best response is patient”, Cathy argues that despite the controversy on the impacts of fluorides in the drinking water, the chemical remains relevant and of great impacts in improving human health.
