Disaster and catastrophe may seem the same as some catastrophic events may be termed as disastrous while some disastrous events may be termed catastrophic. However, there is a difference between the two. A catastrophe is an event that is tragic. Its scale ranges from a misfortune that is extreme to a total ruin or overthrow. In the olden days catastrophe was used to term tragic events such as a volcanic eruption, hurricane among others but nowadays it is used to term any event whose ending is disastrous. A disaster, on the other hand, is an event that happens suddenly and unexpectedly leading to destruction and great loss. This term is more used than the catastrophe. It is less severe than catastrophe as the latter may impose long-lasting negative effects.
