Gender specific programs are programs that are specifically designed for a particular gender. It could be a girl’s only program or boys only program. Such programs are intended to ensure the gender in question are protected from would be environmental, economic, social and civil rights factors that would interfere with the proper activity like learning. This paper seeks to analyze single-sex education program, its pros, and cons and also examine if such a program can be expanded to criminal justice.
One such program is community base intervention and prevention for girls, "City of Phoenix parks and recreation for at-risk youths." The program run across several community centers throughout Phoenix. It runs gender specific programs targeting preteen and adolescent girls. It offers African American girls opportunity to discuss issues pertaining substance abuse, rape, date, relationship and sexually transmitted infections. These programs are designed to make the girls make the complete transition from adolescent to adulthood, irrespective of their cultural background. Dubbed "plan it" the program uses basketball teams and dance group as a major way of integrating the girls.
