Political Science 3460: Global Justice • Spring Semester 2020 Instructor: Prof. Benjamin McKean Third Assignment: Analyzing a News Story of Your Choice Due Date: by 11:59pm on Friday, April 17thth via the dropbox on Carmen Writing Assignment: Select a news article from the past year and analyze it using one of the assigned course readings. Specifics: To analyze a news article with a course reading means making an argument for some claim about the relationship between the two texts (for example, the news story shows some problems with the chosen reading; the reading suggests what to do about the situation described in the story; etc). Your assignment should total between 700 and 1,000 words; assignments longer than 1,000 words will not be accepted. Include the word count at the beginning or end of your assignment as well as a copy of the news article itself. There is no need to summarize the article if it is a page or two; if it is longer, summarize what you take to be the relevant information as briefly as possible (aim for no more than a quarter of your word count). If you’re having trouble including the news article in the document you upload to Carmen, you may include the URL of the article instead. Please select a news article, not an opinion piece, from a trustworthy source such as a daily metropolitan newspaper; avoid sources with explicit partisan political slants. If you are having trouble deciding how to relate your chosen reading to the article, consider the following questions: • Why does that reading help you understand and evaluate the news reported in that story? • How does the news story complicate the argument advanced in the course reading? • What concepts does the news article use that the reading calls into question? • Drawing from both the course reading and the news article, what (if anything) should be the practical response to these political developments? Note: these are just suggested questions to get you thinking; you will not have the space to answer all these questions adequately in the length allowed. Tips: Because this is a short writing assignment, do not waste words with introductions or conclusions like, “Since the beginning of time, humanity has analyzed news articles…” Remember to give a full explanation or definition of important non-obvious terms and concepts and use those terms consistently throughout.

News Analysis- Restrictions on Immigration
The Trump administration has since it came into power become very vocal and vehemently against the lenient immigration policies that have made the US a popular destination for immigrant from all over the globe. With an abundance of resources, employment opportunities, and quality learning and health care facilities, many people have over the years migrated into the US in search of the American dream. The article from nbcnews.com highlights the first victory by the Trump administration in putting limits and restrictions on immigration. It notes of new limits imposed by the government and which would see immigrants who would ultimately become overly dependent on federal assistance on matters such as Medicaid and housing denied green cards (Williams n.p). The logic is that immigrants have been putting unnecessary pressure on the government and consequently preventing it from fulfilling its obligations and duties to American citizens. The move taken by the Trump government and shared in the news article is reflective of the sentiments echoed by David Miller in Immigration: The Case for Limits where he provides some justifications as to why some nations may impose restrictive immigration policies. Contrary to popular opinion, having an unlimited right of migration tends to have harmful consequences and as such, it is imperative to establish some restrictions.
Liberals in society have always argued that individuals should have the freedom to live wherever they want. Undoubtedly, immigrants have for ages supported not only the growth but also dynamism of the country’s economy. Immigrants are involved in various sectors and overall contribute significantly to the US GDP. However, without proper limits and restrictions on immigration, states will start witnessing high rates of migration that would ultimately result in social chaos. Furthermore, immigrants often come from impoverished regions and as such, will mostly be dependent on the governments of the regions they have migrated to. For instance, in the case of refugees, the government will have to provide them with shelter, food and clothing for quite some time before they become self-sufficient. Miller shares that “ in practice some limits may have to be placed on this freedom for instance if high rates of migration would result in social chaos or the breakdown of liberal states that could not accommodate so many migrants without losing their liberal character” ( Miller 364). The government will have to dig deep into its budgets and at times divert funds that were to be used in improving the infrastructure for American citizens just to cater for the needs of the highly-dependent immigrant population. Over the years, the assumption was that immigrants would only be dependent upon cash dependents...
