1 Should private companies be allowed to run correctional institutions? Why or why not?
Private institutions should not be allowed to run correctional institutions because most of these companies are business-oriented, and they turn people into commodities. These companies won’t have money unless they get people to correct or to put behind bars. Again, these companies are selective because they only accept those clients whom they can handle. They are not ready to bear the cost of high-risk criminals because they want to maximize their profits. These companies also manipulate the ruling in courts to get more prisoners, and others get extended sentences. This is achieved by bribing the judges and other related officers.
2. Describe the history of corrections and compare its changes in policy and practices to social change in America. Is there a correlation? Yes or No? Explain.
American Correctional systems have their origins in Pennsylvania, where they were pioneered by William Penn (Larry and John 505). This was a revision of the Pennsylvania criminal code to forbid torture and the careless use of mutilation and physical punishment. The aim was to bring back humanity and orderly treatment to the system. The correctional policies and reforms in the criminal code remained in effect until his death in 1718 (Larry and John 506) when it changed back to public punishment and harsh brutality. They viewed this as a better way of eliminating crime through fear of punishment and silent confinement. It was referred to as the Auburn System (Larry and John 507). This system eventually spread throughout the United States.
