Police Discretionary Process
I believe the most important factors in the police discretionary process are the attitude of the offender and the type and seriousness of the offense. I think the attitude of the offender determines to a great extent, the action of a police officer. As pointed out by Siegel and Welsh, children that display "attitude" are more likely to be arrested than those who are respectful (340). Therefore, I think that if juveniles behave disrespectfully towards an officer, they are more likely to be arrested than those who are polite. In essence, when a juvenile struggles with or touches a police officer, there is a high chance that they will be arrested. However, as indicated by Siegel and Welsh, through experience and training, modern police officers may consider confrontational behavior as part of the job. Nevertheless, I still think that the attitude of the juvenile offender plays a key role in the action of the police.
