Western Civilization: Latin West-(1000AD -1300 AD)
The rise in Latin West in 1000 AD to 1300 AD can be attributed to various changes in the society. Economic expansion occurred during this period where increased agricultural production helped to support the expanding population. Even though, there were negative effects of the Reconquista in Iberia and the Crusades, political stability ensured that the region developed rapidly (Spielvogel 298). Use of Latin united the population as was adherence to Christianity. This paper explores reasons for rise of civilization in Latin-speaking West in 1000 AD to 1300 AD.
One of the technological changes that transformed Latin West was the improvement in ships, which allowed exploration, and this expanded commerce. Furthermore, through translation of Arabic and Greek text in Latin West, there was adoption of various forms of medicine and application of science. Invention of cannon and reintroduction of gunpowder was a major milestone towards the improvement of the region’s military strength through reliance on the technology. This also made it easier for the region to defend itself against invaders from the East and expanding Moslems.
As Catholicism spread in Latin speaking west there was also an increase in the number of people residing in urban areas. However, there was also increased division between the urban middle class and the poor homeless residents. The Catholic parishes could not keep up with numbers because of rapid growth in urbanization and population (Spielvogel 300). There was an expansion of the population in comparison to the early Middle Ages, and this laid a foundation for the creation of new cities in the West, while there was an also increased wealth among the population.
